Who we serve

Neighborhoods in the 12th District Council include: United Center, Humboldt Park, Garfield Park, Loop, Greektown, West Loop, Little Italy, UIC, Near South Side, Lower West Side, East Village, West town, Bridgeport, Ukranian Village, and River North.

The 12th District includes all or parts of the 1st, 3rd, 11th, 12th, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, 34th, 36th, and 42nd aldermanic wards.

Background

The 12th District Council members work hand-in-hand with the Chicago Police Department and other local agencies to address community safety concerns, develop and implement community policing initiatives, and ensure that policing policies and practices align with community values and priorities.

A vacancy on the 12th District Council opened in February of 2026. Per City ordinance, when there is a vacancy, the current District Council members have 30 days to recommend three candidates for the vacancy. The Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability is then tasked with recommending one candidate to the Mayor.

The application process for the 12th District Council vacancy is now open and will remain so until the two existing members of the District Council make their nominations. To apply, please fill an interest application by using the link below and email two letters of support and your resume to DC12@cityofchicago.org. Process for District Council Recommendations for the Vacancy

  • The current members of the 12th District Council have opened an application to fill the vacancy.
  • As applications come in, the Councilors will review the applications and select candidates for interviews on an ongoing basis.
  • Selected candidates will be asked to attend a 30-minute an in-person interview with the Councilors on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
  • The Councilors will then recommend three names to fill the vacancy to the Commission.
  • Pursuant to Chicago municipal code, the latest possible date for a recommendation decision is 30 days after the creation of the vacancy.
  • Recommendations will be voted on and announced at a public meeting of the 12th District Council.

Eligibility Requirements for Serving on the Vacancy

  • You must have lived in the 12th Police District for the last 365 days preceding the date of appointment by the mayor. Check here to confirm what police district you live in.
  • You must be registered to vote in the 12th Police District.
  • You must not have been employed by the Chicago Police Department, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, or the Police Board within the last three years preceding the date of appointment by the mayor.
  • Per state law, you must not have been convicted of any infamous crime, bribery, perjury, or other felony, unless you received a pardon from the Governor that included restoration of the right to hold office.
  • Per state law, if you have any debts with the City of Chicago, you must agree to either pay off all your debts to the City of Chicago or enroll in a payment plan by the time you take the oath of office.
  • You must be willing to submit all necessary ethics and financial disclosure information required by the City.
