Neighborhoods in the 8th District Council include: Garfield Ridge, Englewood, Ashburn, Chicago Lawn, Archer Heights, West Elsdon, Gage Park, Clearing, and West Lawn.
The 8th District includes all or parts of the 6th, 8th, 9th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 21st aldermanic wards.
The 8th Police District Council’s vision is to continue to bridge the gap between officers and residents of the 8th District through meetings and community engagement. The District Councilors of the 8th District will work as liaisons between officers and residents of the 8th District. We will close the gap of this culturally diverse district and help drive crime down with the help of our neighbors. We will work with residents to resolve issues and conflict by getting solutions to the questions and concerns they may have with crime, policing, or with police officers. The 8th District Council will be an alternative for residents who may not feel comfortable talking to police directly. We will take suggestions, ideas, and any creative plans that will improve citizen safety and improve policing.
Our Goals
We will work with residents and CPD leadership to find ways to improve officers’ approach to public safety with all ages, ethnicities, and social groups within the 8th District. As we work continue working with Alders across the 9 different wards in the district, we will develop community events and meetings that gives everyone an opportunity to provide feedback and opinions about crime and policing The 8th District Councilors will respond to public safety concerns by connecting affected residents with public safety resources, including CPD, community outreach groups, and information and services from other city agencies that may help solve any issues that arise. We will provide data and incident related info from our partners at COPA and CCSAO regarding crime and crime stats so that we are transparent as possible while keeping neighbors aware of issues. Our Council will advocate for tools and policies that we believe will help officers do the job and not interfere with their union rights. We continue supporting arbitration and the use of shotspotter. We will push for police leadership and city leaders to provide for officer wellness, maintain officer days off, and offer more training, all to allow officers to perform to the best of their ability and not have to worry about liability. We will continue dialogue about having quality of life calls (parking violations, noise complaints, etc) delegated to other city agencies to relieve officer back logs and free up cars for more serious crimes. We will work hard to communicate the community’s public safety concerns to city officials and police leaders. Our Council will work with the LGBTQ+ community, people of color, and other communities regarding public safety. We will continue expanding social media and live feeds to garner as much feedback and interaction as possible. With the 8th District being the largest district in the city, we want to ensure the needs of our district are appropriately heard and represented by the 7-member Commission and the 9 Alderman in the district. In the end we anticipate working successfully with residents to address safety needs and interactions with officers.
