Press Release

Statement from Leonardo Quintero, Chair of the 12th Police District Council, on Behalf of the Family of María Izquierdo

Date:

May 13, 2025

On behalf of the family of María Izquierdo, I want to extend their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love and support following the heartbreaking tragedy that took María’s life on the 1500 block of South Laflin Street in the Pilsen neighborhood.

This is an incredibly painful time for the Izquierdo family, and they are doing everything they can to hold each other close as they begin the long and difficult process of grieving. While they are thankful for the compassion extended by friends, neighbors, and supporters, they are also feeling overwhelmed by the volume of media requests and outreach.

At this time, the family is asking for privacy and space to mourn. They are not ready to speak publicly and kindly request that members of the media refrain from reaching out for interviews or further comment. If the family chooses to share anything publicly, they will do so when they feel ready. Until then, we ask everyone—especially those in the press—to please respect their need for peace and healing.

If anyone has information related to the incident, please submit a tip anonymously at www.chicagopolice.org/submit-a-tip or contact Area 3 Detectives. Any leads can help bring justice to María and closure to her loved ones.

With respect and solidarity,

Leonardo Quintero

Chair, 12th Police District Council
