What is the Nominating Committee?
The Nominating Committee is a twenty-two-member public body comprised of one member from every elected District Council. That means the Committee has one representative from every police district in Chicago, providing it with diverse perspectives.
The Committee plays a key role in filling commissioner vacancies on the CCPSA. They conduct the search for, and interview interested candidates seeking appointment to the CCPSA.
After concluding the search and interviews for potential Commissioners, the Committee provides the Mayor and City Council with an option of two candidates to fill each vacancy on the CCPSA. This list of candidates is decided on by majority vote of the Committee.
The Committee holds public meetings at least four times a year. They also hold occasional special meetings, particularly during the commissioner search process.
How does the Nominating Committee organize itself?
The Nominating Committee is ruled by its public bylaws and its internal processes. To expedite the work of the Nominating Committee, four Nominators are internally selected to serve as regional liaisons. These liaisons help to create the Committee’s agendas, oversee the posting of agendas, notices and minutes, provide organizational direction to the Committee, and support other Nominators in their work.
